FAQ
Common Questions
Which course should I choose?
Choose the 16-Hour CCL Class if you need the full Illinois CCL training requirement, the 8-Hour Veteran CCL Class if you have eligible veteran training credit, the 3-Hour CCL Renewal if you are renewing an Illinois CCL, or the Mini Course for a short introductory or refresher session. The Mini Course alone does not satisfy the 16-hour CCL training requirement.
Does completing a course guarantee a license?
No. IPS provides training and completion documentation for applicable courses, but the Illinois State Police determines license eligibility and approval.

What score do I need to pass shooting qualification?
Illinois requires a live-fire qualification of at least 30 rounds: 10 at 5 yards, 10 at 7 yards, and 10 at 10 yards, using an Illinois State Police-approved B-27 silhouette target. At least 70% of the rounds fired must hit the target (21 hits for a 30-round qualification). Students must follow the instructor's directions and handle firearms safely. These are state minimums; completing training does not guarantee a concealed carry license. Read 430 ILCS 66/75
Which certificate will I receive?
Students who successfully complete the 16-Hour CCL Class receive the Illinois State Police 16-hour training certificate. Students who successfully complete the 3-Hour CCL Renewal receive the Illinois State Police 3-hour training certificate. Depending on the student's verified training-credit path, the 8-Hour Veteran CCL Class includes the applicable Illinois State Police 16-hour or 3-hour training certificate. An optional Illinois Protective Services wall certificate with holder is available for $5. The Mini Course does not provide an Illinois CCL training certificate. Training completion does not guarantee license approval.
How much is a replacement certificate?
Illinois Protective Services charges $75 to replace a lost course completion certificate. This is an IPS replacement fee, not an Illinois State Police license or card replacement fee.
What documentation is required for veteran training credit?
Bring a DD-214 showing honorable discharge or retirement for instructor review. IPS must verify the documentation before applying the eight-hour veteran training credit.
Where can I get official FOID and CCL information?
Use the Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau for current application, eligibility, card, and licensing information. IPS is a training provider and is not the Illinois State Police. Illinois State Police Firearms FAQ
